Reprint of a project management

I joined this organisation firstly to learn about new ideas, techniques and methods to sell my products; secondly, I wanted to learn about the products and services on offer by Empower Network.

I have worked in the project management industry for over 20 years and have witnessed many changes and innovations to it, in terms of project management lifecycles, project management frameworks and the use of project management consultants.

Six years ago I decided to create a new project management product to sell to experienced project managers, those considering project management as a career and business owners. The product was called the SKM Project Management document templates. Why did I create it, well I did it to help me?

I am a contract project office manager. I go into large corporations and help set up a document folder structure and guidelines to help project managers deliver their projects. I also track projects, to enable them to complete on time, to budget and the correct quality measures.

The work is very much an administrative function, and not suited to everyone, but I enjoy it. I enjoy meeting creating solution that solves their project management problems.

Most large organizations use propriety documents that their project managers use. So, for example, if a project manager is creating a business case to get project approval, then he will use a company template document. The benefits of this feature are one of standardization and consistency. Some managers or other stakeholders review dozens of these documents from project managers who require funds and resources for their projects. It saves them time if all the documents they receive have the same ‘look and feel’. They gain both experience and knowledge using the same template for all projects and can ask more detailed questions. They know what to look for and expect; therefore they can assess more quickly what information or data is missing.

As I mentioned many large firms have these templates but not all of them. Therefore, I am able to offer a valuable service to my clients if I can suggest or recommend templates that I have used or observed in similar organizations. This is how my templates were born.

I now use Empower Network to promote and distribute my ‘SKM project management steps’ products, which are available as either a CD or file download. Someone forwarded an Empower Network email to me, which I am grateful for.
